For some time now, we’ve been looking for some scientific or academic validation to support People Activation. We even considered commissioning our own study; however, this newly released book does the job better than we could have ever hoped.
‘Alive at Work; The Neuroscience of Helping Your People Love What They Do' is written by Daniel Cable, Professor of Organisational Behaviour at London Business School. The book reveals that we all have a biological need to ‘seek’, to explore, experiment and learn; however business today is not conducive with this.
This is music to our ears; we believe People Activation is about getting people hands-on with the business they invest so much of their time in.
Organisations are letting down their employees. We can do a much better job of maintaining their engagement with their work. However, first, we need to understand that employees’ lack of engagement isn’t a motivational problem. It’s a biological one.
Exploring, experimenting, learning: this is the way we’re designed to live. Moreover, work, too. The problem is that our organisations weren’t designed to take advantage of people’s seeking systems. Thanks to the Industrial Revolution.”
As a result, organisations deactivate their employees’ seeking systems and activate their fear systems, which narrows their perception and encourages their submission. When people work under these conditions, they become cautious, anxious, and wary. They begin to believe that their current state is unchangeable, and they disengage from work.
Live communication, events and experiences are the perfect opportunity to kick start activating seeking systems. Businesses, leaders need to make vital communications more effective by investing in them and ensuring they get people ‘hands-on’ to ensure they can activate their seeking systems for themselves. The impact will be that employees can maximise their contribution to the success of the business.
