Less but Better.

Chris Teague - 2 mins

What's it for: Maximising impact

Who's it for: Those who deal with complexity

"Strive for simplicity, manage complexity." Ross Brawn. Total Competition.

Complexity cannot be avoided, so it must be managed. However, no one can manage everything; therefore, there needs to be a bias towards simplicity.

Focus on simple solutions where possible, as these reduce the risk of unintended consequences.

A focus on simplicity means having the discipline not to pursue quantity at the expense of quality. As scale inevitably creates additional challenges that can distract from the primary goal or desired outcome.

"Most of what exists in the universe – our actions, and all other forces, resources, and ideas – has little value and yields little result; on the other hand, a few things work fantastically well and have a tremendous impact." Richard Koch.

Seeking simplicity and devoting valuable time to thought, is one of the most essential actions of any leader.

Working hard is important. But more effort does not necessarily yield more results. "Less but better" does.
